Kanha Tiger Reserve, nestled in the Maikal range of Satpuras in Madhya Pradesh, is internationally renowned as one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Spanning across a vast area of scenic valleys, grasslands, and dense sal forests, it served as the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling's classic, The Jungle Book.
Going on a safari in Kanha is a journey through a pristine ecosystem. It is globally recognized for saving the rare species of Hard-ground Barasingha (Swamp Deer) from near extinction, earning them the title of "the Jewel of Kanha". Along with the Barasingha, Kanha is home to a high density of the Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, wild dogs (Dholes), Indian gaur, and over 300 species of birds.
Two distinct options are permitted by the Forest Department to explore the wilderness of Kanha. Depending on your budget and preference, you can book a private Jeep or a shared Canter.
A private open-top 4x4 Suzuki Gypsy accommodates up to 6 registered passengers (plus a mandatory driver and forest guide). This provides the flexibility to navigate forest tracks at your own pace under professional guidance, making it perfect for wildlife photographers, families, and couples desiring privacy.
The Canter is an 18-seater open-air transit bus operated directly by the Forest Department. It is a budget-friendly option for solo travelers or large groups who want to experience the core tracks of Kanha. Canters run on pre-designated paths within the premium core areas of the park.
The reserve is split into well-regulated Core and Buffer zones. Core areas offer prime tiger territories with controlled vehicle entries, while Buffer areas feature scenic, less congested forest trails.
Core zones are the heart of the national park, offering maximum biodiversity and high tiger activity. Vehicles are restricted, and entry is heavily regulated.

Buffer zones wrap around the core boundaries. They feature fewer vehicles and quiet tracks suitable for birdwatching and observing nocturnal species.

To access different zones within the reserve, the Forest Department has set up three main entry points located in different geographical areas of the park.
Situated on the Mandla side, this is the most popular gate. It provides quick access to Kisli and Kanha core zones, as well as the Khatia buffer zone. It features excellent accommodation facilities nearby.
Located on the Balaghat side of the reserve. This gate leads directly into the Mukki core zone and Phen buffer zone, which are known for spotting the Bengal tiger and diverse avifauna.
Situated on the northern end of the reserve, accessible from Jabalpur. This gate opens directly into the dry deciduous grasslands of the Sarhi core zone, famous for its blue bulls (Nilgai).
Safaris in Kanha run in two daily shifts: morning and afternoon. Timings are regulated according to sunrise and sunset and adjust slightly as seasons change.

Important Note: The national park is completely closed for afternoon safaris every Wednesday. It is also closed on Holi and during heavy monsoons.

Safari bookings operate on a strict first-come, first-served basis. During peak holidays (November, December, and May), core zone permits sell out months in advance. We suggest making reservations at least 45 to 60 days before your visit.
Indian citizens must provide a government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving License) during registration. Non-Indian citizens must provide a valid Passport and Visa. The original physical copy of the same registered document must be shown at the gate.
Keep your voice low and avoid wearing bright clothing (earth tones like green, brown, and khaki are recommended). Getting down from vehicles inside core zones is strictly prohibited except at designated canteen areas. No littering is allowed inside the reserve.

Kanha National Park remains open to tourists from October 15th to June 30th every year. The park closes for the monsoon season from July to mid-October.
The landscape is lush green post-monsoon. The weather is cool and comfortable, though morning drives can be very cold, requiring heavy winter layers. Ideal for birdwatching and landscape photography.
As natural pools dry up, wildlife aggregates around the remaining waterholes. Grass cover is low, making this the ideal season for tiger tracking and viewing animal movements.
